Dear parents and carers,
It’s been a busy week again with lots happening in school.
Year 2 enjoyed their trip to Exmoor Zoo on Wednesday, despite the damp weather. They learned about rainforest animals which linked to this term’s topic on Brazil. They enjoyed seeing all of the animals in the zoo. A big thank you to the staff for organising and leading the trip and the parents and carers who gave up their time to accompany us on the trip. These trips are not possible without your support.
On Tuesday evening, we had our final Local Governing Body (LGB) meeting of the year. We looked at how the school had moved forward this year. What the challenges and successes have been and how that will shape our direction next year. The LGB are a small group of people who play a very important part in supporting and challenging the school. They are volunteers who give up their time to help. We’re very grateful for their support.
As Owl Class know, and some of you will have noticed, Mrs Thomas is pregnant. This week we have been interviewing candidates to cover her maternity leave which will start in October. We will announce the successful candidate soon and will ensure that they come in and work alongside Mrs Thomas before she goes on maternity leave in the Autumn term so that we create a very smooth transition for the children.
Our assembly on Monday was a Jigsaw (PSHE) assembly about change. We discussed how we’re always getting older and changing. As we get older there are lots of things to look forward to such as going to bed a bit later, learning new things and eventually getting a job. We talked about how we can’t stop some of these changes, that it is quite normal to feel a bit worried but that the best thing to do is be positive and embrace the changes. I explained to the children how, growing up, my family had moved around the country quite a lot. We counted together and worked out that I’d been to seven schools. I explained that I always felt a bit worried about starting new schools, but that my mum always said, “You’ll be fine. You’re going to enjoy it.” She was always right!
This is an important message for the children as we look ahead to next week and our first transition afternoon on Tuesday. The children will be moving to their new classes for the afternoon, meeting their new classmates and staff. They will bring home a slip with the name of their new class and teachers. We know there will be some nerves and excitement but that this is completely normal. They’ll have a great time.
Also, next week we have Sportsday on Wednesday afternoon. The gates will open at 1.40pm with events starting at 2.00pm. The weather forecast is looking good at present. We look forward to seeing you there to cheer on the children.
Finally, please remember suncream and sunhats next week. It’s looking like a warm sunny week.
Have a great weekend.
Best wishes,

John Mortimer, Head of School
