Learning for Life

Dear parents and carers,

We began this week with a Jigsaw (PSHE) assembly focussed on relationships.  In particular, our focus was how to be a good friend.  We agreed that to be a good friend we need to be fair, take turns, be kind, help, listen and be positive.

This week we have had two reviews in school, which has been a great chance to show off how well the children are learning.  Firstly, on Thursday we had a TEAM review with Mr Polak (Director of Education and Acting CEO) and Mr Swait (school improvement advisor).  The primary focus of the review was maths.  Mrs Haynes and I joined the review.  We observed lessons in every year group, spoke to children within their lessons, looked at children’s books and spoke to a group of Year 1 and Year 2 pupils.

We were all pleased with the high quality of teaching and learning taking place, the evidence in children’s books and also how well children were able to talk about their maths, both what they enjoy and what they find tricky.  We picked out some small areas for improvement which is really helpful and will enable us to continue to develop.  Mr Swait also spoke to the group of children about behaviour in the school.  The children reported that behaviour was generally positive, that they felt safe and that they knew what to do if they felt unsafe.  The children also clearly explained what bullying was and knew what they would do if they felt they, or a friend, were being bullied.

Secondly, today, we had a visitor in from the Ilsham Reading Hub to review our phonics teaching and learning.  They have observed phonics across Year 1 and Reception and met with Mrs Powley and I to discuss our phonics and early reading provision.  We hope to secure some support from the hub to continue to improve our phonics and early reading provision.

As it’s the summer term, there are lots of sporting activities taking place.  Owl Class enjoyed their second swimming session today.  We can see progress already, which is fantastic.  Year 2 enjoyed their Tarka Tennis Festival on Wednesday.  It’s a great opportunity for them to take part in a larger event with fellow Year 2s from across the Pilton Community College learning community.

We have also confirmed our dates for Sports day 2026.  It will take place on the afternoon of Wednesday 24th June with a back-up date of Wednesday 1st July.  Parents, families and friends will be welcome to come along and support.

As you will see, Mr Thomas our CEO and Executive Headteacher has stepped down from his role and left the Trust.  We would like to thank him for all that he has done for the school, the trust and the community and wish him well for the future.

I hope you all enjoy the bank holiday weekend, whatever you are doing.  We will see you all on Tuesday morning.

Best wishes,

John Mortimer

Celebration of Achievements

Frances and Frankie proudly took part in the Tarka Gymnastics Daffodil Competition this weekend. Both gymnasts performed brilliantly, showcasing their hard work, skill, and determination.

They each came away with an impressive selection of medals, including 2nd place in individual events and an outstanding 3rd place overall in their respective groups. A fantastic achievement—well done to both!

Frank completed some fab extra science learning at home by collaging a plant. Well done Frank!
