Dear parents and carers,
Today is the final day of our Big Walk and Wheel active travel challenge. We hope that you and the children have enjoyed it. We’ll know the final data next week, but so far we have recorded 920 (we’ve already beaten last year’s total of 884) active journeys and are in the top 200 of over 1000 similar-sized schools. Well done everyone! Our most active class will win an extra PE lesson with Mr Mortimer.
Active travel has lots of benefits, as mentioned last week. We know that many of our pupils travel actively every day anyway. Hopefully, for those that don’t, the Big Walk and Wheel can be the start of a new active travel habit. Let’s keep it rolling!
The children had a busy day on Tuesday with Martin from All Stars Cricket. They had lots of fun, learned some new skills and enjoyed being active.
We’ve had two groups out on trips this week who have both represented the school brilliantly. 25 Year 2 children had a great time with the residents of Portmill Court. A fantastic day at RHS Rosemoor was had by Year 1 on Wednesday. Thank you to all the parent helpers on these trips and to the staff for putting in the hard work into organising them.
We’re really looking forward to our Sports for Champions event after Easter. Unfortunately, there were some technical issues with the online sponsorship platform, but these are now resolved and it’s great to see there is already some sponsorship money coming in.
Sports for Champions will be a really good day and hopefully, very inspiring for the children. It is actually going to form part of a week-long project for the whole school called Ambition. We know the children are young, but dreams and aspirations are really important. We want to inspire the children and get them thinking about what they might like to do as an adult. We want them to also think about how their learning now can help them get there. We are organising for several visitors to come into school that week and talk about their jobs and how they got there. The children will be thinking of questions, asking their questions and listening to the answers. It will be a great way to begin the summer term.
As part of our climate action plan this year, we are working to reduce the amount of food waste that we produce, particularly at lunchtimes. We’ve discussed as a whole school and through our class assemblies this week why this is important and gathered some feedback from the children on why it is happening. We would also like to gather your views on this and will ask for some feedback once we have analysed what the children have told us.
A reminder that the PTFA have organised an Easter Fayre for next Wednesday.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend. A reminder that school will finish on Thursday next week as Friday is the Good Friday Bank Holiday.
Best wishes,

John Mortimer
